Rodenstock Scitex S-3 89mm f/5 Scanner lens

The technical specs for the Scitex Smart 340 scanner are pretty amazing, even though the scanner is from the mid-1990s, originals from 35mm to over 11.8 x 17 inches, one-pass, three-color CCD head, 12-bit color and 5260dpi resolution and a cost for around $30,000 in 1996 (which is close to $50,000 in 2018 dollars).  Knowing these details I jumped at the chance to pick up a 340 scanner earlier this year for less than $300 even though I didn't really know any of the important things like, number of lenses, focal lengths, fixed or variable aperture. No information was available online about the lenses, other than that it used a single-pass, 4 lens system.

Image Quality: The S-3 89mm has has very good edge to edge performance with pretty good chromatic aberration correction. The S-3 89mm lens is a much better performer than the 67mm S-3 lens, or a typical enlarger lens.

Chromatic aberration correction: Good. There are two types of chromatic aberrations; longitudinal color, LoCAs, also called Bokeh CAs, and lateral CAs, also called color fringing, neither are an issue with this lens. This lens is good CA correction but it is not at the same level as the top scanner lenses.
Lens mount: Standard M39 lens mount which is 39mm x 26tpi (turns-per-inch or threads-per-inch). Also known as Leica Thread-Mount (LTM). This is the most common mount for enlarging lenses.
Filter threads: none
Normal or reverse mounting: Installed in a Scitex scanner the S-3 67mm and 89mm are mounted in reverse with the 110mm mounted forward. In testing I have found the best image quality this lens mounted in reverse. 
Cost: These lenses can be found on Ebay from time to time but prices fluctuate wildely. I have seen these sell of $50 to $400 each. Most lenses on Ebay seem to come from Israel since that is where the Scitex corporation was based.

The source for this lens was a Scitex 340 Smart Scanner, that origionally sold for $30,000 usd in 1996, that I was able to pick up for less than $300 in 2018.

TYPICAL INSTALLATION

This lens has a common M39 lens mount but you need to mount the lens in reverse.

Lens magnification is controlled by the amount of extension. For less magnification you can mount the reverse adapter, step-up ring and lens to the camera directly. For more magnification you can add more extension tubes.
